This is probably the 10,000th blog post about the Twitter attacks that have taken place over the past week. Facebook was not immune to the attacks either. These cyber attacks are being reported in every traditional media outlet from CNN to ESPN to local newspapers.
The attention the attacks have received tell me social media is indeed a mainstream channel. However, these attacks should make marketers step back and take notice. Just like when you participate in a collapsing stock market, when you’re in a collapsing social network you need to diversify.
Twitter is a great broadcast tool, but it shouldn’t be your only one. Twitter has almost made social media practitioners lazy. It’s the new YouTube. You know what I mean. When someone high up the chain wants viral, it was always, “just put it on YouTube.” Now even social media day-to-day folks are saying, “Just Twitter it.”
Main lesson: diversify your channel strategy.
